Board Foot Calculator
Board feet for hardwood and rough lumber, the unit it is priced by.
How it's calculated
Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12, times the number of boards. One board foot is 12 × 12 × 1 inch. Hardwood is measured at its rough thickness in quarters: 4/4 = 1 inch, 8/4 = 2 inches.
Example
Ten 1 × 6 boards, 8 ft long: 1 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 × 10 = 40 board feet.
Quarter thickness
| Quarters | Rough thickness |
|---|---|
| 4/4 | 1" |
| 5/4 | 1¼" |
| 6/4 | 1½" |
| 8/4 | 2" |
| 12/4 | 3" |
