Gravel Calculator
Cubic yards and tons of gravel or crushed stone for a driveway, path or base layer.
How it's calculated
Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Tons = cubic yards × the material's weight per cubic yard. Gravel is typically 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard; 1.4 is the default. Your supplier's figure for their material is the one to use.
Example
A 50 × 10 ft driveway, 4 inches deep: 6.17 cubic yards × 1.4 = 8.6 tons.
Typical weights (vary by supplier and moisture)
| Material | Tons per yd³ |
|---|---|
| Pea gravel | 1.3–1.4 |
| Crushed stone / #57 | 1.3–1.5 |
| Crusher run / road base | 1.4–1.6 |
| River rock | 1.3–1.4 |
| Sand (dry) | 1.3–1.4 |
| Topsoil | 1.0–1.3 |
