Mulch Calculator
How many cubic yards or bags of mulch a bed needs at the depth you want.
How it's calculated
One cubic yard spread 1 inch deep covers 324 sq ft. Cubic yards = area × depth (in) ÷ 324. Bags = cubic yards × 27 ÷ bag size in cubic feet, rounded up.
Example
200 sq ft at 3 inches: 200 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.85 cubic yards, or 25 two-cubic-foot bags.
Recommended mulch depth
| Use | Depth |
|---|---|
| Around trees and shrubs | 2–3" |
| Flower beds | 2–3" |
| Weed suppression on bare ground | 3–4" |
| Paths and play areas (wood chips) | 4–6" |
